Because guess what? I do all three.

I’m a naturally anxious person. I’ll come up with so many scenarios for myself and other people that usually look something like the absolutely worst-case scenario imaginable.

Sooo when I find myself in a spiral, this is what helps me. It may be a little unhinged, but that’s okay. We’re a little unhinged.

Here’s what I do:

1. Shake It Out

I start shaking. You can stand up or sit down. But let it out. I’m talking about getting into a whole body shake, if possible. The important thing is to just start shaking it out.

For real. Let loose. You don’t need to hang on to all that stress an anxiety.

Just by doing this, you’re basically saying bye-bye to the fight or flight response.

Animals do this naturally. Deer will completely shake from head to hoof after escaping a predator to get the stress out of their nervous system.

That physical reset is built into our bodies too, and we can tap into the same mechanism.

2. Hum (even if it’s just your own song)

The second one is humming. Yup. Seems too simple to work. But even if you don’t have a song in mind, just start humming.

I do this without even thinking, and then I realize afterwards I’m doing it because I might be a little stressed, a little anxious about something I can’t quite place.

There’s something very real going on here in our bodies. The vibration from humming can stimulate the vagus nerve, which helps regulate your nervous system and shift you out of stressed mode.

It’s kind of like why people whistle when they’re scared… same idea. You’re signaling to your body that you’re okay.

So if you’re feeling a big case of overwhelm. Hum a little tune to yourself and pay attention to how your body reacts.

And again, get ready to say bye-bye to fight or flight.

3. Scent Therapy

I don’t know why, but orange essential oil and vanilla go straight to that part of my brain that just triggers something that makes me feel happy and calms me down so much.

I don’t even have to think about it. I smell it, and it’s like sunshine and happiness.

It could be any scent for you, but that combo? That’s mine.

You might need to do a little experimentation. But I’ll bet there’s a smell out there that once you find it will, no joke, take you straight to your happy place.

It’s really worth finding it, because scent has the power to pull us directly out of our anxiety spirals.

Smell is directly wired to the brain’s emotional center (the limbic system) so certain scents can shift your mood almost instantly without you thinking about it.

That’s why one smell can feel like a memory, or like flipping a switch. It’s pretty incredible. I mean, Marcel Proust got a whole (huge) book out of smelling a cookie.

But if you’re thinking this isn’t gonna work, then don’t do it, Boo Boo. Don’t do it.

I’m just sharing what I do when I feel overwhelmed and anxious. And it happens more often than I’d like.

— S

Thanks for reading! All you’re going to do is start your morning with a glass of warm water.

It sounds basic, but warm water can help stimulate your digestive tract and wake things up gently.

Think of it as warming up your system before asking it to perform on the porcelain stage.

2. Olive oil (yes, really)

I’m going to hold your hand when I say this: Stop using coffee as a way to poop.

I know. I’m sad about it, too, because I love a little peppermint mocha action.

But after your glass of warm water, hold off on the caffeine infusion. Instead, take a tablespoon of olive oil. Just one tablespoon. It’s going to help you reduce some internal friction and get things moving more smoothly.

Healthy fats like olive oil can help lubricate the digestive system and stimulate bile flow, which can encourage movement.

It’s not sexy, but then again neither is being constipated.

3. Black seed oil (proceed carefully)

You can also take black seed oil, but listen up. Black seed oil is way more potent than olive oil.

Olive oil you can do every day. This? Maybe once a week.

It’s stronger and can have a more pronounced effect on digestion, so this is less “daily ritual” and more “break glass in case of emergency.”

4. Magnesium citrate (the heavy hitter)

If you really need to go, get yourself some magnesium citrate. I have this on hand all the time in case of constipation.

Magnesium citrate works by pulling water into your intestines, which softens stools and basically tells your body, “We’re doing this now.”

Magnesium citrate works so well that you want to make sure you’re close to a bathroom, okay? Just … make sure.

Do this or don’t, boo boo. I’m not gonna force you to do anything you don’t wanna do.

But if you haven’t gone in three to four days, you might wanna get checked out just to see what’s going on, ’cause that’s not good.

— S

Thanks for reading! okay? Gas is basically trapped air and fermentation doing the most in your gut. It doesn’t feel good.

So the goal here is simple: calm things down and let that pressure move along naturally. And to do that, we’re going to make a simple fennel and ginger tea.

Fennel relaxes the muscles in your digestive tract so gas doesn’t get trapped, and ginger helps move things along so you’re not just sitting there bubbling like a science experiment. That’s not a vibe.

And honestly, it just feels like you’re doing something nice for your gut instead of fighting it. The best part is, you probably already have everything you need to make this tea. And if not, you can find everything you need at any grocery store.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon fennel seeds

Fresh ginger (a small piece, sliced or grated)

Hot water

A squirt of lemon

A dash of vanilla

1 spoonful of honey

1. Build the base

In a clean glass, add a tablespoon of fennel seeds. Then slice a small piece of fresh ginger root and add that in. You really want to use fresh ginger.

2. Steep it

Pour hot water over it and let it steep for seven minutes.

This gives the fennel and ginger time to release all the good stuff, i.e. the compounds that actually calm down your gut and reduce gas.

3. Add the extras!

After the fennel and ginger has steeped for seven minutes, add a squirt of fresh lemon juice and a dash of vanilla (sometimes I add more than a dash). Lastly, stir in a spoonful of honey, honey.

Now it actually tastes good, which matters more than most people admit.

You can strain the tea if you don’t like the seeds, but I like to chew on them when I’m drinking it. I like a little texture. Plus, chewing the fennel seeds gives you a more direct hit of those gut-soothing compounds, so it’s like doubling down on the effect.

Subscribe now

Drink this whenever you feel like you’re tooting a little too much. That’t what I do!

And if you’re thinking this isn’t gonna work, then don’t do it, boo-boo. Don’t do it. Stay gassy. But I don’t want you to be too tooty. intact:

Do you want to smell delicious but don’t know how to DIY that? I can fix that.

Let’s make our own scent balm! Here’s what you need to get started:

Ingredients

2½ tablespoons mango butter (or shea butter, but you’ll have that shea butter scent)

6 drops sandalwood

4 drops labdanum

4 drops cardamom

4 drops vanilla

4 drops amber

4 drops steam-distilled lemon (steam-distilled is important!)

Instructions

You’re going to start by dropping two and a half tablespoons of mango butter into a glass jar. Mine could only fit about this much and it’ll last me a long time. You don’t need much!

Then you’re going to melt the mango butter in a double boiler or microwave. Microwave is faster, but you really have to watch it. Not up close, but you have to watch it. Microwaves vary, so start with 20 or 30 seconds. I melted mine in thirty-second intervals, and it took about a minute and ten seconds.

Then you let it cool down a little bit! Next, add six drops of sandalwood oil.

Then, four drops of labdanum, four drops of cardamom for a little heat, four drops of vanilla, and four drops of amber.

Lastly, four drops of steam-distilled lemon so it’s not phototoxic.

Mix it up! It should smell amazing right about now.

And then all you need to do is pop the mixture into the freezer for about five minutes, so it’s hardened up.

It’s that easy to make your own all-natural scent balm right at home! And all you do is apply it wherever for a hint of this bright, fresh scent.

It’s lemony, but sexy ‘cause of the amber, cardamom, and labdanum. It’s very elevated and it doesn’t smell like a lemon drop.

But if you’re thinking this isn’t gonna work, then don’t do it, boo boo. Don’t do it. ;)

— S

Onion juice for hair? Yes, if it's shedding!

I hate this. Yes, really. This isn’t a TikTok trend somebody made up last month. Onions in hair care have roots in Ayurvedic tradition people have been rubbing this stuff on their scalps for thousands of years, and there’s actually a reason it stuck around.

Here’s the short version: onions are loaded with sulfur, and sulfur is found in keratin, one of the main building blocks of your hair. Stinky, but powerful.

So when you apply it directly to your scalp, you’re essentially feeding your hair what it’s already made of. On top of that, sulfur may improve blood flow to your scalp and support your hair follicles, which means better conditions for growth. And onions have antibacterial properties that may help fight scalp infections because a healthy scalp is more likely to have strong hair follicles. There’s even a 2002 clinical study where hair regrowth started after just two weeks of using onion juice, with nearly 87 percent of participants seeing results by six weeks. That’s not nothing.

You only need about a third of an onion. Grate it, squeeze out the juice. That’s what you’re putting in your hair!

Now, the smell. It’s a thing. To make it more bearable, mostly for the people who have to be near you, add a dropper of peppermint oil and a dropper of rosemary. You don’t have to, but I’m not trying to clear the room. The rosemary also isn’t just a cover-up; it’s doing real work for your scalp too.

Mix it together, apply a little at a time, and massage it into your scalp for about five minutes. It’s actually not as bad as you think it’s going to be. A little peppery, maybe?

If you make more than you need, it keeps in the fridge for two to three days and use it within that window.

To wash out that smell, just double wash with a clarifying shampoo! Leave the shampoo in your hair for a couple of minutes, then rinse, and repeat!

If you read “onion juice” and immediately checked out, that’s valid, go in peace, booboo.

But if you’re dealing with shedding and you want something that has thousands of years and actual science behind it, this is worth trying.

It smells interesting, but your hair will thank you.

-S

You should smell like you down there.

Let's talk about all the possible scents you can smell.

sidandlisten

Nobody talks about this. It shifts depending on what you ate, how hard you worked out, where you are in your cycle, and a hundred other things your body is quietly doing on your behalf. And most of the time? It’s completely normal. The problem is that nobody tells you that.

Here’s how to actually read what your body is telling you.

If it smells like ammonia, that’s almost always diet or dehydration, especially if you’re eating a lot of protein. Your body processes protein and sometimes the excess comes out smelling like ammonia. You’ll notice it in your sweat and your urine. It also helps to make sure you’re wiping fully, front to back, every time. If the smell is constant and comes with discomfort or pain, that’s worth a conversation with your doctor. It could point to a bacterial imbalance that is easy to take care of when you know it’s there.

If there’s a faint, fruity scent, and we’re talking a whisper of fruit, not a candy aisle, you’ve probably been eating a lot of pineapple or other sweet fruit. That’s it. That’s the whole story. Your body metabolizes what you feed it, and sometimes it tells on you in the most harmless way possible! We love our fruits here.

If it’s musty and earthy, you’ve been sweating. Working out, running around, living your life. Shower after you sweat and you’re good. There’s nothing more to it, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

If the smell is very strong and genuinely foul, the kind where you’re like, okay, something is off, then yes, go to your doctor. It could be a forgotten tampon, which happens more often than people admit. It could be an active infection. Either way, it’s treatable, but you need a professional to tell you what you’re actually dealing with! This is not the time to DIY it.

Our scents change all the time. We are not supposed to smell like perfume. None of us, men or women. Your body is doing its job, and sometimes that job has a distinct scent.

Now you know what it means!

-

S

How to make Everything in this bottle has a job based on that metaphor, and once you understand it, you’ll never forget it.

Start with castor oil. Fill the bottle about a quarter of the way. Make sure it’s cold-pressed, organic, and just castor oil. Nothing else on the label.

Castor oil is your fertilizer. It kills bad bacteria, reduces inflammation, and creates a healthy scalp environment where follicles can actually thrive.

Then fill the rest, past halfway, with jojoba oil. Jojoba is your water. Your hair just drinks it up. It moisturizes the scalp deeply, and a moisturized, happy scalp means faster, healthier growth.

Now add two droppers of pumpkin seed oil. This is your pest control, and here’s why: there’s a hormone called DHT that signals your body to shrink hair follicles and slow growth down. DHT is basically the main villain of hair loss. Pumpkin seed oil blocks it.

One dropper of rosemary essential oil. One dropper of peppermint. Both are growth lamps, they stimulate circulation in the scalp and wake follicles up. And rosemary isn’t just a vibe. It’s been clinically shown to work just as effectively as minoxidil for hair growth.

Then you just shake it! That's it.

Now you apply it to your scalp, and make sure you really massage that scalp. The massage is the other piece of the puzzle for hair growth. Moving your scalp physically for 5 minutes will do WONDERS!

Now go and grow your hair, booboo!

-S

How to make your own body oils at home

An easy four-oil formula that actually works!

sidandlisten

Lotion and body oils are not the same thing, and they don’t compete with one another.

Lotion hydrates, and body oils lock that moisture in so you’re not flaking all over your favorite black bodysuit! Not candy. Not vanilla. Not even Calvin Klein’s CK One.

You’re supposed to smell like you, and somewhere along the way, nobody told you that, so now you’re spiraling.

Let’s fix that.

Here's what I know: your body has a scent. It changes with your cycle, what you eat, how stressed you are, and even whether you've been drinking enough water.

That's just your body doing its job, keeping itself balanced, communicating with you, and running the whole operation without you having to think about it. The problem isn't the smell. The problem is that nobody ever taught us how to read it. So we panic, we reach for the scented wash, we make it worse, and then we feel worse about ourselves. I've been there. Most of us have.

So here's what's actually going on and what you can do about it.

Go commando at night.

Your body needs to breathe. Wearing underwear to bed traps heat and moisture, and moisture is where problems start. Same rule applies right after a shower, if things are still damp, don’t put underwear on yet. Either dry it with a towel, use a blow dryer ON COOL, or just wait. Let everything air out. It sounds small, but it makes a huge difference.

Drink more water. A lot more.

Dehydration concentrates everything. EVERYTHING, including your body’s natural scent. It doesn’t make you smell bad, exactly. It just makes you smell … louder. Someone my size needs eleven cups a day. Start there and adjust from there. That’s the easiest thing you can do to smell more like you!

Warm water only, once a day.

Clean under the hood with warm water, especially after sweating. That’s it. Got a good sweat on at the gym, warm water under the hood. You were hot and sweaty all day, warm water under the hood.

No soap required and definitely no scented body wash. Your vaginal skin is as sensitive as the inside of your mouth. The second it starts to feel stripped or irritated, you’ve gone too far.

The thing is, we’re marketed so many scented products to smell “nice” down there, but scented products disrupt your pH, and a disrupted pH is what actually causes odor problems. So you’re really not fixing anything by reaching for scented soaps. As soon as the skin feels like the inside of your mouth, warm water ONLY. You don’t rinse your mouth out with soap, do you? Same thing applies down there.

Start taking probiotics.

Interesting fact: gut health and vaginal health are connected. The same good bacteria that keep your gut balanced help keep your vaginal microbiome balanced too. If you’re not already taking a probiotic, this is worth trying. More specifically, probiotics that include:

Lactobacillus rhamnosus (GR-1), Lactobacillus reuteri (RC-14), and Lactobacillus crispatus.

I really like this one.

Watch the garlic and onion.

This one is annoying, because garlic and onion are delicious and they belong in everything. I love them. But if your body is sensitive to them, they will make your scent stronger. Not wrong. Just stronger. But you decide if the trade-off is worth it. (For me, onion and I have had a falling out anyway, so...)

If something smells genuinely off? Boric acid.

Not different-than-usual. Not stronger. But truly off, like your body is telling you something’s wrong, boric acid suppositories. Use them at night with a liner, please! By morning, you’ll notice a difference. But you’ll also realize why you needed a liner in the first place. This isn’t a daily thing. It’s for when something’s actually shifted. I use boric acid right after my period, once. Quick and easy.

None of this was explained to me growing up. I had to figure it out the slow, embarrassing way, and I don’t think you should have to.

Your body isn’t a problem.

-S

You Deserve to Glow. And five minutes, tops. And it works every single time, booboo.

1 tablespoon alcohol-free aloe vera gel

1–2 drops of vegetable glycerin

½ teaspoon jojoba oil

If jojoba isn’t your thing because it’s too greasy, or too oily or whatever, swap it for squalane. It has a beautiful slip, and it absorbs very quickly. They both have a different texture, but you’ll know which one your skin prefers after one try! Personally, I love jojoba oil. I use it for everything…

And then all you do is mix it. Pat it into damp skin. That’s the whole thing.

The aloe is genuinely doing the heavy lifting here. It’s a humectant, which means it pulls moisture in and keeps it there. It also helps repair your skin barrier which is the invisible layer that, when it’s healthy, gives your skin that whole lit from within thing everyone is chasing. Aloe actually addresses the root cause, which is why it’s not just another trendy ingredient. You should know I love my aloe, too.

Glycerin is a one-or-two-drops situation for a reason. Use too much and you’ll know. Use the right amount and your skin just looks... full. Soft. Like you’ve been taking care of yourself. If you use too much, that’s when things can start to feel sticky. I personally don’t mind that specific feeling, but I know a lot of people can’t stand it!

Squalane’s big thing is that it’s lightweight and non-comedogenic, meaning it moisturizes without clogging your pores. It also has a long shelf life compared to a lot of other oils, so it won’t go rancid on you. And because it’s so stable and neutral, it plays well with basically every other ingredient. No drama, no reactions.

You can make a big batch of this.

And you can keep it on your bathroom counter, your desk, your nightstand. You can share it. You can make it again when it runs out, which won’t take long because once your skin finds something it loves, you’ll reach for it constantly.

Make a batch, keep it in the fridge, and use it every day for a week. What you see in the mirror afterward, that’s yours. <3

-S

Why You Break Out More After Doing Everything Doing everything “right,” and watching your face break out like you’re thirteen again. But before you spiral, know this: your body isn’t punishing you. It’s responding to all the good things you’re putting through it.

1. The Detox Dilemma

When you clean up your diet and start moving, your body doesn’t just politely say thank you, it throws open every window.
Your liver, lymph, and gut start pushing out what’s been lingering: hormones, processed food residue, pollution, even emotional stress.

Your skin, being the body’s largest detox organ, often becomes the emergency exit.
So, those breakouts? They’re not new villains. They’re old toxins just rudely leaving your body.

So, instead of attacking your skin…

Dry brush before showers.

Do gentle face massages to move lymph (love this).

Add lemon water to your mornings.

Your skin isn’t misbehaving. It’s just decluttering.

2. Overhydration Without Replenishment

Drinking more water is beautiful, but water alone isn’t magic. We know this.

If you’re guzzling liters without electrolytes, your body may flush out vital minerals like sodium and magnesium, which help regulate oil and hydration balance.

Result: your skin feels confused, tight, dry, yet still breaking out.

Add a pinch of sea salt or a squeeze of lemon to your water once a day. Eat mineral-rich foods: avocado, greens, seaweed.

Hydration is a relationship, not a flood.

3. Hormones in Recalibration Mode

When you start eating better and working out, your cortisol, insulin, and estrogen levels all shift. Surprise!

It’s like changing the music mid-dance. Your body just needs a beat to catch up.
For a few weeks, that transition can show up as jawline or chin acne… classic hormonal zones.

But don’t worry. Stay consistent with balanced meals and enough rest. It often takes 4–6 weeks for your hormones to find their new rhythm.

You’re not regressing. I promise.

4. Circulation Stirring Old Congestion

Working out increases blood flow and lymphatic movement, which means all that stagnant oil and buildup under your skin might finally make an exit.

It’s not a new problem though. It’s the end of an old one.

Instead of stopping the movement altogether, double cleanse post-workout. Avoid touching your face or letting sweaty towels linger.

5. The Emotional Detox

The skin isn’t just physical, booboo. It’s emotional real estate.

Sometimes when you start caring for yourself again, your body releases stored tension, grief, or even old memories. The nervous system catches up slower than your routines do.

And sometimes, that release looks like a breakout. But that doesn’t mean it’s a forever thing.

Rest. Reflect. Let yourself be.

The Glow After the Storm

If your skin’s flaring up right now, take heart: you’re not backsliding. You’re just shedding the old.

Breakouts during lifestyle changes are not failure signs, they’re transition markers.
The glow you’re working toward isn’t just surface-level. It’s a cellular, emotional, energetic thing!

Give it time. Give yourself time.

Your body’s not at war with you.

—S

Thanks for reading! Now, normally this wouldn’t be that big of a deal IF this didn’t happen every other day.

I realized that my hatred for lawnmowers had been born. I was overstimulated. I was stressed. I hadn’t even taken a sip of my coffee yet.

Someone decided to grind metal on their driveway a moment later.

Now, I can’t just start hulking out, I know that. So, what did I do?

The Vagus Nerve Trick

I pushed my tongue to the roof of my mouth, just behind my front teeth. It's a low-key nervous system hack.

The vagus nerve is the queen bee of our parasympathetic nervous system (aka our rest and digest mode). And the tongue-to-palate pressure is a vagal stimulator. Our palate (the soft and hard part) is LOADED with nerve endings.

When we’re stressed, our sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight) floods our body with cortisol, tightens muscles, and speeds up our heart rate. That’s where overstimulation kicks in (yay), racing thoughts, shallow breathing, sensory overload!

Pushing our tongue up to the palate stimulates these tiny nerve endings, signaling that we have to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (in charge of the calm), particularly via the vagus nerve.

It’s like hitting the brakes gently in traffic. You won’t completely stop what you’re feeling, but you’ll slow it down a bit.

So the next time you’re feeling overstimulated, try this:

Tongue up to the palate.

Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.

Hold for 4.

Exhale for 6–8.

Repeat a few times.

Let’s not hulk out.

—S

The Woman Next Door

She didn’t know what she was looking for ... until her neighbor gave her a taste of something real.

sidandlisten

NSFW.
